Canoeing officially became the seventeenth scholarship sport at the AIS in April 1989. Six fulltime and three associate scholarships were offered.

AIS programs have supported Flatwater canoeing and Slalom racing. The slalom program began in New Norfolk, Tasmania in March 1990 and the&nbspFlatwater canoeing program intially in Maroochydore, Queensland before moving in 1991 to its present site at Pizzey Park on the Gold Coast.

The AIS/national team training facility for Sprint Canoe/Kayak was opened at Pizzey Park, Mermaid Waters on the Gold Coast in June 1991, and became the permanent base for the AIS Canoeing program. The program began as a residential program, but is now a camps-based program, with AIS athletes from all over Australia coming together to train for a specific number of weeks in the year.
