Award winners Alana Nicholls and Rosalyn Lawrence
Canoe Sprint World Cup Gold Medalist and National Champion Alana Nicholls won the Olympic Canoeist of the Year while Wildwater World Champion Ros Lawrence won the Non-Olympic category at the Australian Canoeing Annual Awards dinner held at the Novotel Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday 12th November 2011.
Nicholls and Lawrence were joined by other major winners:
Australian Canoeing CEO, Greg Doyle, said that this year has been very successful for canoeing in Australia and that the quality of the nominees and winners reflected that.
"We were all so proud of the achievement of our athlete's this year" Mr Doyle said.
"With the Olympics and multiple World Championship next year, we are really looking forward to seeing our paddlers fulfill their own potential"
Talking of the Canoeists of the Year, Mr Doyle said that the achievements of Lawrence and Nicholls were real stand out performances.
"For Alana to come back after a year away from the sport and to win World Cup medals and finish 4th at the World is a phenomenal achievement"
"It was also incredibly impressive for Ros to pick up major medals in two different disicplines, the Wildwater World Championship and the overall Slalom World Cup"
"There appears to be a trend for paddlers to compete in various disciplines for cross training and racing experience"
