U23 K4 crew lead by Glenn Rypp
ICF U23 World Championships
Australia will feature in five A finals on day three of the inaugural ICF Canoe Sprint Junior and U23 World Championships in Welland, Canada tonight.
Racing will begin from 11pm Australian Eastern Standard time (9am local race time) with the junior women’s K4 500 A final featuring Victorian Rebecca Mann, Queensland’s Alyssa Bull, Bayswater’s Shannon Reynolds and Sydney Northern Beaches kayaker Deeandra Godoy.
Jayden Newell and Mitchell Hughes will then feature in the junior men’s K2 1000 B final before Queensland’s Bill Bain and South Australian Sean Lohse contest the coveted U23 and junior K1 1000 A finals.
Australia will also feature in the women’s U23 K4 500 and men’s U23 K2 1000 A finals before appearing in a host of semifinals in the afternoon.

Australia continued its excellent start to the Junior and U23 Canoe sprint World Championships in Ontario, Canada with another four boats progressing to A finals.
After watching his older brother David win gold in London last year, Scott Smith looks on track for a similar fate this weekend after he combined with South Australian Glenn Rypp and Queensland duo Bill Bain and Jordan Wood in progressing to the U23 K4 1000 A final.
The quad cruised through to the final bypassing the semifinal stage after their second place finish in heat one was enough to guarantee them a spot in the final.
The quad finished 2.554 seconds behind the Russian crew of Alexandr Sergeev, Alexey Vostrikov, Maksim Spesivtsev and Nikolay Chervov who recorded the fastest time of 3:02.258.
The Australian K4 depth appears to be strong with the junior crew of Joel McKitterick (QLD), Jy Duffy (QLD), Peter Euers (NSW) and Riley Fitzsimmons (NSW) also progressing to the A final after recording the fastest semifinal time of 3:10.639.
A week away from celebrating her 21st birthday, Sunshine Coast paddler Alyce Burnett showed why she is one of the most gifted young paddlers in Australia dominating her U23 women’s K1 500 heat.
Burnett blitzed the field, automatically securing a final berth after winning her heat in 1:55.701, 2.959 seconds ahead of Belarus kayaker Aleksandra Grishina.
Burnett was ‘stoked’ with her performance.
“My heat felt awesome, I really timed my start perfectly and got out there with I suppose a little bit of a high stroke rate but it felt awesome for the rest and I came out with an easy win.”
Inspired by Burnett’s performance Victorian teenager Rebecca Mann secured a junior K1 500 final berth after placing third in her semifinal.
Mann finished 3.642 seconds behind victor Emma Jorgensen of Denmark, with Russian Inna Nikitina separating the paddlers in second.
Western Australian duo Jaymee-Lee Martin and Phoebe George missed out on an A final berth in the U23 women’s K2 500 after finishing seventh in their semifinal.
South Australian pair Madison Davies and Josephine Bulmer finished sixth in the K2 500 semifinal, missing the top three final cut.
In the afternoon the K1 200 and K2 200 heats were contested across both age categories with all the Australian boats progressing to the semifinal stage.
Western Australian Todd Brewer finished fifth in his U23 K1 200 heat, while fellow WAIS paddler Alexander Graham followed producing the same result in his junior K1 200 heat.
Burnett continue her red-hot form progressing to the U23 women’s K1 200 semifinal after finishing sixth in her heat.
Talented Western Australian teenager Shannon Reynolds also advanced finishing fifth in her junior K1 women’s heat.
In the final event of day two, the men’s K2 200.
South Australian pair Callum Dunn and Jeremy Petho progressed to the U23 men’s K2 200 semifinal on Saturday after they finished fourth in their heat. While the junior boat containing Victorian pair Kieran Carson and Jarrad Campbell finished fourth in their heat with the top seven boats moving on to the next stage.
