Some inspiring words from the Australian coaches to the team the night prior to competition.
The 2013 ICF Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships commences in Welland, Canada today.
A world class field has been assembled for the four day event with more than 800 athletes from 70 nations set to compete.
Australia will field a 32 person strong team lead by Sunshine Coast duo Alyce Burnett and Bill Bain who will contest the coveted women’s K1 500 and men’s K1 1000 events.
The following inspirational words were delivered to the team the night before competition.
Anna Wood (National Women’s Coach)
This is it. You have all worked hard to be here. Don't let nerves get the better of you. Just remember, you are playing a sport. Grow and learn from the experience and enjoy your racing. Nerves are normal. Just remember it is not the be all and end all.
On the start line, just focus on what you have to do. Enjoy the challenge, don't hold back, go for it and learn from the experience. In your head go over and over again what you have to do and then do it on the day.
Learn from it, enjoy the journey and don't leave anything in the tank.
Good luck girls and go for it.
Alyce Burnett (U23 Athlete)
Have fun when you are out on the water. My best races have always been when I have been able to relax. Don't get caught into the hype. Remember that you have done the work and when you are on the start line also remember that you can't control others. You can only control what you do. Do the little things right and stick to your race plan and the rest will take care of itself.
As I said, the best races I have ever had were when I arrived at the starting line, relaxed and ready to perform. Enjoy the experience and have fun. Lap up the energy of the crowd and use it as a positive to push you harder.
David Foureur (National Women’s Head Coach)
I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone (Athletes, coaches, managers and support staff) all the very best of luck as you head into U23/U18 world Championships. I strongly believe preparations for these teams has been the best I have ever seen in my long history in the sport through the support of SIS/SAS programs, Australian Canoeing NEDP, dedicated coaches, athletes and support staff - Everyone has had the eye on the prize for some time now and finally it is here!
Wearing two hats - Former National Elite Development Manager and now National Women’s Head Coach I really want to wish everyone the very best of luck….I honestly wish I could be there to see the final result of the last 2 years, I will be watching results closely hoping everyone achieves the success they deserve.
Graham Bendeich (Team Manager)
I have watched your preparations and the work that both you and the coaches, Anna, Christine & Kris, have put into making sure you are ready and well equipped to perform at your very best. In fact this is the best preparations I have seen and I know that all of you are now ready to get out there, execute your race plan, give 150% and make it happen. Apply yourself, do what you know you have to do and the result will take care of itself. I wish each of you good luck and good racing.
