Jess Fox will contest the U23 K1 and C1 semifinals on Friday
The second day of the 2013 U23 and Junior Canoe Slalom World Championships has concluded following an action packed day of whitewater action in Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia.
Australia built on their solid start from yesterday with another seven boats joining the nine that qualified on Wednesday moving through to tomorrow’s semifinals.
The day began with the U23 K1 women’s and C1 men’s heats.
19 year old Jessica Fox bounced back from a missed gate on her first run to produce a clean second run, posting the second quickest time in the same event she won silver in at last year’s London Olympic Games.
Fox finished 3.62 seconds behind Czech favourite Katerina Kudejova who recorded the fastest time of 107.67.
“I had a 50 (second penalty) at gate one, I actually hit the gate and it went the wrong way around my head and the rest of the run was really good so that was frustrating, but I managed to pull together a solid run for the second run which was enough to qualify me so that is what counts,” said Fox.
Penrith Valley kayaker Alison Borrows also advanced to the semifinal stage recording the 21st fastest time.
Melbourne’s Maggie Webster missed the top 30 cut in 45th.
The U23 men’s C1 heats followed with senior C2 canoeist Ethan Hodson progressing to the semifinal after recording the 25th fastest time, despite a gate touch.
The junior events followed after a break for lunch with the Junior K1 women producing a triple treat with all three girls advancing to the semifinal.
The best of them was Hobart’s Kate Eckhardt who finished 13th in the heat despite two gate touches resulting in a four second time penalty.
Western Australia’s Georgia Rankin and Penrith’s Noemie Fox also advanced finishing 18th and 21st respectively.
In the final event of the day the C1 junior men, Tasmanian Daniel Watkins was the only Australian to progress to the semifinal sneaking into the top 30 cut off in 29th place.
Western Australian duo Brodie Crawford and Steven Lowther finished 37th and 44th respectively.
Racing continues on Friday with the semifinals for all U23 and Junior events. The Finals to be spread out across Saturday and Sunday.
