C1W podium: Caroline Loir, Jess Fox & Katerina Hoskova
ICF Slalom World Cup 3 (La Seu d'Urgell, Spain)
The third ICF Canoe slalom World Cup in La Seu dUrgell, Spain has concluded following three days of fast and action packed whitewater paddling.
Following a historical day of racing on Saturday where Jessica Fox won C1 gold and Lucien Delfour K1 Silver, the Australians were unable to add to their medal tally in Spain.
On the final day Fox was unable to repeat yesterday heroics finishing tenth in the K1W final.
Three gate touches resulting in six seconds of penalties all but ended Fox’s chance of a second medal with the 19 year old no match for Slovenian kayaker Eva Tercelj who navigated her way through the 20 gate course with ease.
Tercelj won in 106.93, 2.26 seconds ahead of British paddler Elizabeth Neave and Czech Katerina Kudejova third over a second further back.
Earlier in the day Melbourne’s Sarah Grant and Old Bonalbo’s Rosalyn Lawrence finished 19th and 30th respectively in the K1W semifinal.
“It has been a tough three days of racing here,” said Fox.
“I was happy to win the C1 of course and I was pleased with my semifinal today which would have been fast enough for a medal.”
“Unfortunately in the final I made an early mistake and then got caught up on pole eight losing a lot of time, and it was an uphill struggle after that.”
The C2M event was the only other discipline that was contested on the final day with French crews winning the gold and silver medals.
Newly formed Australian pairing Robin Jeffery and Ethan Hodson were eliminated following Friday’s heat when they missed the top 20 semifinal cut in 22nd.
There are still two World Cups to come in the series with Tacen, Slovenia to host the next from the 16-18 August.
Next stop for Fox will be Liptovsky Mikulas in Slovakia where she will join the U23 and Junior teams for the ICF U23 and Junior World Championships from 17-21 July.
“Overall the World Cups have been a good reference at this point in the season and with nine weeks to go to senior Worlds I feel my speed is good and I still have good room for improvement in terms of execution in the finals.”
