Dual Olympic medallist Ken Wallace has finished fourth in the mens K1 1000 final, with a day of racing still to come at the third and final ICF Canoe sprint World Cup in Poznan, Poland.
In a quiet day for the Australian’s, Wallace began the day optimistic of another podium finish in the coveted men’s Olympic discipline, after finishing third at the previous World Cup a fortnight ago in Racice, Czech Republic.
The 29 year old got off to a great start, passing through the 250 metre mark in second place, before dropping back to third at the half way point.
Unfortunately, Wallace could not match the speed of the top three paddlers, who pulled away in the closing 250 metres, with London Olympic Bronze medallist Max Hoff of Germany winning in 3:32.06, 1.76 seconds ahead of Denmark’s Rene Holten Poulsen.
Belarus paddler Aleh Yurenia finished third, with Wallace fourth, 4.81 seconds behind Hoff’s winning time.
Wallace will look add a fifth medal to his tally in tomorrow’s K1 500 A final, where he will be aiming for a third straight gold medal, after recording victories at the first and seconds World Cups.
Joining Wallace in the final will be 24 year old Sydneysider Lachlan Tame, who will be appearing in just his second A final, and will be out to improve on his seventh place finish in Racice, Czech Republic last month.
The Australian pair will also contest the gruelling men’s K1 5000 event, while the duo will combine in the men’s K2 200 B Final, after narrowly missing out on an A final berth by 0.51 seconds today.
Racing will get underway from 5:10pm Australian Eastern Standard time, with the K2 200 B final up first for Australian at 5:40pm.
