The Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association (AOCRA) has won the bid to host the 2016 World Outrigging Sprint Titles at the Sunshine Coast.
Australia competed against Hawaii and Italy in the bid to win the event, and AOCRA president Mark Forbes attributes part of their success to support from the Sunshine Coast Council, and Mayor Mark Jamieson. The Sunshine Coast boasts a sunshine average of seven hours per day, making it an ideal location for the event. The event is to be held at Lake Kawana, a world class buoyed flatwater racing venue.
The international federation for outrigging, the IVF, has 35 member countries and interest levels are promising a record level of attendance.
AOCRA used a local design company dtb! to produce a stunning presentation to present to the IVF. The president of the IVF visited the Sunshine Coast to observe the facilities and gave a highly favourable report on the suitability of the area for the World Titles.
The event will follow the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships and will lead into the Aussie Aito (rudderless outrigging) event and the National Marathon titles to be held in Mooloolaba, encouraging competitors to stay on in Australia for more competition and enjoyment. The IVF 2015 AGM will also be held in conjunction with the event.
The event will give another opportunity for the Sunshine Coast and Australia to host a world class sporting event and will serve as a fantastic display of paddle sports to the nation.
