Perth kayaker Stephen Bird has caused a major boil over in the final of the men's 200 metres at Champion Lakes in Perth.
Bird proved too strong for a field which included Beijing gold medallist Ken Wallace and defending Australian champion, Murray Stewart.
Another star of the future, former surf champ Lachlan Tame, finished second, relegating Wallace to third and Stewart, who was chasing a fourth consecutive title, to fourth.
Bird will team up with fellow West Australian Jesse Phillips later today to defend their K2 200 metres title, the event in which they finished sixth in London last year.
Alana Nicholls will be hot favourite to make it a winning treble for Western Australia today when she defends her K1 200 title.
