Auzzie Junior Development team shines at the New Zealand national championships in Kawerau.
Australian Lucien Delfour won the men’s K1 event at the New Zealand National Championships with the fastest time of the day; 89.29. Delfour, along with Alistair Anderson is coaching the Junior Development tour under the watchful eye of new Australian National Coach Julien Billaut.
The second fastest man of the day was Kiwi Olympian Mike Dawson, who finished 1.4 seconds behind the Australian, showing a promising return from a serious back injury he obtained whilst racing at the Whitewater Grand Prix in Chile.
Tasmanian Kate Eckhardt finished second in the Open K1 women class. The young pocket rocket started her year on fire by winning a gold medal in the C1 event at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival, and looks to be continuing her good form. The women’s K1 event boasted an international field, with local NZ Olympian Luuka Jones taking first place with a time of 103.90, followed by Eckhardt (110.97) and Martina Wegman from the Nederlands in a time of 111.85.
Eckhardt has finished her tour feeling confident.
"I was very happy with my racing through all three competitions. I managed to have multiple clean runs which was very pleasing."
Eckhardt also dominated in the women’s C1 category, winning outright with a time of 126.32 and switching her position from the WK1 to beat Luuka Jones by just over ten seconds. Australian Georgina Collin also performed well, taking third place with a time of 136.45.
"I was very pleased with the standard that I was able to perform at at nationals because I was far from fresh. after about 5 days of racing I was able to put down a few solid runs."
Australia’s fastest Junior K1 man was Angus Thompson of NSW, who finished in a respectable 8th position in the Open category.
