The AC National Performance Director ('NPD') is responsible for the technical direction and the effective management, delivery and co-ordination of Australian Canoeing’s High Performance Programs (Flatwater & Slalom Canoeing).
They are accountable for delivering the best possible outcomes at international competitions, including training programs, competition plans, elite coach development and service delivery to nationally identified athletes.
The NPD will also be responsible for the overall management of nationally coordinated athlete and coaching development programs in the sport and accountable for the budgeting, management and expenditure of all funds allocated by Australian Canoeing to both the Flatwater & Slalom Olympic Canoeing program.

Richard was the AIS and Australian National Head Coach for Canoe Slalom from 2001 to 2004, the Head Coach at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Canoe Slalom Teams and the National Coach in Australia since 1998. A former Canoe Slalom athlete, he won five individual and five team world titles for Great Britain in the men's kayak event between 1981 and 1993. He was regarded by the AIS as one of their most outstanding coaches.
Richards work history and involvement at all levels of the sport of canoeing over a period of 25 years as an elite athlete, coach and manager provides a rich background for this position. In particular, Richard’s proven leadership, communication skills and innovation at the High Performance level will is a sound background in enabling him to accept the challenges of this demanding position.
