Canoeing Athletes with a Disability

Australian Canoeing recognises the following statement from the ICF declaration of accessibility for canoeing athletes with a disability.

In recognition and with the endorsement of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the International Canoe Federation (ICF) has created Paracanoeing as a declaration of our support for the development of canoe sport for persons with a disability.

The ICF has prided itself on its capability to engender canoe sport with equality, fairness and a genuine sense of sportsmanship. Furthermore, the ICF’s dedication to the development of canoeing for persons with a disability is fundamental and essential to the accessibility of our sport worldwide. This Declaration provides additional opportunity to provide a chance for the disabled, providing additional avenues for development and success within canoe sport.

In recognition of Paracanoeing and the sentiments portrayed in the ICF’s Statutes and mandate, Australian Canoeing agree to the following:

  1. To develop and promote Paracanoeing within their respective countries;
  2. To facilitate the equal participation of both genders through Paracanoeing;
  3. To promote equal participation of all competitors with a disability, regardless of severity;
  4. To provide pathways and education for athletes with a disability that will assist their progress from novice to elite level in Canoeing;
  5. To ensure Paracanoeing events are held at National Championships, ideally by 2011;
  6. To support Paracanoeing events in ICF events from 2009 onwards;
  7. To support ICF in it’s goal of achieving Paralympic Status for canoeing for the Paralympic Games in 2016;
  8. To work cooperatively and collaboratively with National Paralympic Committees and other national sporting bodies for athletes with a disability to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes for canoeing.
