The Canoe Centre was the initial training ground for local Olympic silver medalist Jacqueline Lawrence and her sisters, along with many other internationally successful athletes.

A significant number of national slalom and wildwater events have been held at the Canoe Centre, which is the preferred venue in New South Wales for young athletes to learn skills and progress in a natural environment.

The 90-year-old power station was damaged during floods last year and has been shut ever since, resulting in no flow through Goolang creek and the Nymboida Canoe Centre.

The age of the power station means Essential Energy cannot get environmental credits for the electricity it generates, reducing its viability for the company.

The course and facilities at the Nymboida Canoe Centre are ideal for the rounded development of athletes and the loss of access to Goolang Creek would be a major blow for the future of competition and recreation canoeing at a national as well as a local level.

The Canoe Centre facilities and the creeks downstream from the Power Station also provide much-needed local employment, tourism, education and family recreation for the Clarence Valley and beyond. The Canoe Centre is the only one of its kind in Australia, offering a world-class white-water venue for canoe/kayak competition and recreation, which attracts clubs, school teams and international competitors.   This facility cannot operate without water from the Power Station.

Australian Canoeing has written a letter in support of the petition, which you can view here.
