On day one Australia’s senior men were in action with Ken Wallace winning the coveted K1 1000.

The Currumbin Creek star won in 3:32.58, 1.94 seconds ahead of Gold Coast’s Jordan Wood. Sunshine Coast paddler Bill Bain finished third half a second behind Wood.

Wallace made it back to back victories in the K1 500 event winning in 1:39.10.  Less than a second separated the top three with fellow Olympic gold medallist Jacob Clear finishing second and Bain in third.

Local paddlers Jy Duffy and Joshua Jones-Rew took out the junior men’s K1 500 titles winning the U18 and U16 age groups respectively.

Duffy claimed the state title in in 1:43.78, 1.89 seconds ahead of Sean Lohse and Jayden Newell.

Lohse went one better on Sunday to claim the U18 K1 200 state title in 39.87, 0.32 seconds ahead of Newell with Duffy coming in third.

Brothers Canoe Club duo Alex Haas and Jake Donaghey produced one of the races of the weekend recording identical times in the C1 500 final. 

The Olympic duo crossed the line in 2:05.13 to share the victory, 7.09 seconds ahead of Varsity Lakes’ paddler Rain Metsoja.

They later went on to secure a dominant victory in the C2 500 event finishing more than 36 seconds ahead of Benjamin Manning and Brian King of Varsity Lakes.

In the senior women’s events Bernadette Wallace took out the K1 500 final in 1:54.67, 1.64 seconds ahead of Emilie Fournel. South Australian Cat McArthur edged local kayaker Alyssa Bull for third.

Fournel went one better in the K1 1000 final winning in 4:05.19, 4.03 seconds ahead of Bull and Bendigo’s Rebecca Mann.

The women’s K2 500 title was won by McArthur and Coco Howcroft of the Sunshine Coast.

The U18 K1 500 title was won by Sunshine Coast teenager Caitlin Gilliman ahead of Kawana Waters local Brianna Massie and Currumbin Creek’s Chloe Sterry.
