Irish Canoe Union – Position Vacant – National Canoe Slalom Coach

Job Title – National Canoe Slalom Coach 



To be determined in discussion with the successful candidate. Position will require extensive international travel.


Salary and Terms

  • This is a fixed term contract of service starting in January 2006 up to and including the Beijing Olympics at the end of August 2008.
  • Remuneration will be negotiable and dependent on a candidateÕs qualifications and experience.
  • Travel & Expenses Budget to be determined.
  • Contract to be renewed at the end of each year with renewal subject to a satisfactory evaluation of progress against agreed performance indicators. Progress will also be reviewed on an ongoing basis.


Reporting to

The successful candidate will be required to report regularly, both verbally and in writing, to the Canoe UnionÕs Chief Executive. The successful candidate will also be required to report at regular intervals to the ICU Canoe Slalom Committee and the ICU Olympic Performance Committee.


General Responsibilities

  • Development and co-ordination of appropriate coaching, competition, and sport science programmes designed to underpin and improve the performances of Senior, Developmental, and Junior Canoe Slalom Teams.
  • Coach Senior, Developmental, and Junior Team athletes on a regular basis.
  • Assist the Irish Canoe Union with the promotion and development of Canoe Slalom within Ireland.
  • Implementation of initiatives that will compliment the Irish Canoe Union Coach Development and Long Term Athlete Development Programmes.
  • Produce written plans, documentation, and reports as required.


Specific Skills

  • Comprehensive background in high performance coaching with experience of integrating sport science and technology into coaching practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively coach Canoe Slalom athletes of all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to enhance performance of international calibre Canoe Slalom athletes.
  • Competent spoken and written English language skills.
  • Effective organisational and communication skills.

It is expected that the successful candidate will:

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of a range of effective coaching and international competition programmes.
  • Initiate and co-ordinate the implementation of programmes to improve the performances of members of the Senior, Developmental, and Junior Canoe Slalom Teams.
  • Initiate and co-ordinate the implementation of programmes designed to ensure the qualification of athletes for the Beijing Olympics.
  • Assist the implementation of programmes that will contribute to the general development of Canoe Slalom in Ireland.
  • Maintain and develop in conjunction with the ICU Chief Executive a strong relationship with relevant agencies but in particular with the Irish Sports Council, the National Coaching & Training Centre, and the Olympic Council of Ireland.
  • Manage in conjunction with the ICU Chief Executive the resources made available for the implementation of Canoe SlalomÕs domestic, international, and Olympic objectives.
